A DARTable Day for the Family

By Tricia White | Managing Editor

Looking for some family fun? DART helps you explore North Texas without a car. Take a day to get on DART and discover all the experiences you and your family can have up and down the rail lines.

Start your adventures at The Dallas World Aquarium, home to exotic birds, animals, plants, and a dramatic glass shark tunnel. The aquarium is walkable from West End Station in downtown Dallas, along the Red, Blue, Green, and Orange lines.

A short walk from the aquarium, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science has fascinating, family-friendly exhibits including Soccer: More Than a Game, which runs through Sept. 7 and shows how physics, biology, and technology shape the world’s favorite sport.

For lunch, explore the wide variety of food trucks at Klyde Warren Park, which is walkable from the museum. This energetic green space is a favorite of local families, with a children’s park, a storytelling tree, and a splash pad perfect for hot summer days. The park lies on downtown Dallas’ northern edge, a few blocks from St. Paul Station on the Red, Blue, Green, and Orange lines.

Up for even more adventure? Have a wild afternoon at the Dallas Zoo. To get there, ride the Red Line to Dallas Zoo Station, just a few stops south of downtown. The zoo has more than 2,000 animals and exhibits such as the Wilds of Africa. Your family can feed giraffes, step into a prehistoric park and explore dinosaurs, ride a mini-train or an iconic carousel, or visit the children’s zoo.

DART makes it easy to get to family fun throughout the region. No car required (and no traffic or parking expenses). The GoPass® app makes everything even easier. Download it today, and you can plan trips, buy passes, and more.

Nearby, be sure to check out the brand-new Halperin Park. The nearly three-acre space is a “deck park” spanning a freeway and features a pavilion, an amphitheater, a playground area, interactive fountains, and a second level overlooking the Dallas Zoo.

Another possibility for a daylong excursion: the Fort Worth Stockyards. The Old West comes alive in this national historic district where you can see longhorns in a real cattle drive or shop for Western wear. Stick around any Friday or Saturday evening, and you can catch a rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum. All in all, it’s a uniquely Texas experience. Get there by taking the TRE about an hour’s ride west of downtown Dallas to Fort Worth Central Station, then transferring to Trinity Metro‘s Orange Line bus.
