Beat the Heat at these DARTable Museums

By Tricia White / Managing Editor

Looking for a DARTable adventure that’s also an escape from the heat? Visit a museum!

In the Dallas Arts District, near Pearl/Arts District Station and St. Paul Station, there is the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Near West End Station, you will find the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Dallas Holocaust Museum and the JFK Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. But there also are museums beyond Downtown Dallas that offer a unique experience.

African American Museum of Dallas. The only one of its kind in the Southwest region, this museum seeks to understand American history through the lens of the African American experience. Visitors will find a rich display of African American artistic, cultural and historical materials. It has one of the largest African American folk art collections in the U.S. Take the Green Line to Fair Park Station.

Frontiers of Flight Museum. Aviation buffs can get up close with aircraft at this museum on the corner of Dallas Love Field Airport. The 100,000-square foot facility is home to over 30 aircraft and space vehicles, including early biplanes, WWII aircraft, the iconic 1939 “Flying Pancake” and the Apollo 7 command module. Take the Green or Orange Line to Inwood/Love Field Station, then Bus Route 529 to Lemmon @ University.

Garland Landmark Museum. This DARTable Gem is located in the former Santa Fe Train Depot, an historic landmark built in 1901. Exhibits include artifacts from early settlers like newspapers, farm tools, and quilts, as well as a wooden railroad car. Take the Blue Line to Downtown Garland Station.

Las Colinas Mustang Museum. In the East Tower of Williams Square Plaza, adjacent to the Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture, the museum features more than 115 photographs and storyboards that depict the installation process of the sculpture. The museum also is home to additional works of art by African wildlife artist Robert Glen, who made the sculpture. The nine galloping mustangs are on display in the center of Williams Square. Take the Orange Line to Las Colinas Urban Center Station.

Meadows Museum. Known also as the “Prado on the Prairie,” this museum is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. It houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. While there, you also can visit the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which is home of both the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the George W. Bush Institute. Take the Red, Blue or Orange lines to Mockingbird Station, then the Museum Express Route 743 to the SMU campus.
