Busy families looking to experience new adventures together don’t have to go far. The same train or bus that gets you to school or work also can take you to fun. North Texas is bursting with cultural experiences, dining and entertainment, all walkable from a DART rail station or bus stop.
The WaterTower Theatre, an easy stroll from the Addison Transit Center, offers a diverse mix of inspirational performances in a state-of-the-art facility. Close to Downtown Garland Station, the Plaza Theatre is an elegant 350-seat venue that has shown inexpensive family-friendly films since 1941. And the Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Dallas, near Mockingbird Station, is a cool spot to watch live, locally-produced theatrical performances.
DART is also your ride to a diverse array of palate-tempting food. Italian Café is a short walk from the Las Colinas Urban Center Station. This family-friendly restaurant, famous for its homemade sandwiches, pasta and seafood recipes, is located near picturesque Lake Carolyn. In Oak Cliff, Emporium Pies serves fresh and delicious hand-crafted desserts out of a quaint 1930s Victorian bungalow. Take DART Bus Route 722 or 021 to Bishop at Davis.
If you are in search of physical activity, check out Summit indoor rock climbing gym near Downtown Carrollton Station. The facility has programs for all ages and ability levels. You could take a river kayaking trip or guided hike at the Trinity River Audubon Center in Dallas. Take the Green Line to Buckner Station, then Bus Route 466 to Great Trinity at Longacre.
For something more laid-back, head to Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas. It is an outdoor oasis, which offers an assortment of food trucks lining the east side of this urban greenery, as well as a wealth of free programming, from jazz on the green to storytelling time. A short trolley ride away from the park is The Rustic, a cool spot to hangout on the lawn while enjoying Texas-style food and music.
There are, of course, lots of other opportunities in North Texas to connect with nature. You could stroll through the 27-acre Farmers Branch Historical Park, located along the Green Line at Farmers Branch Station. From the Downtown Plano Station, tour the Interurban Railway Museum and enjoy a picnic at Haggard Park.
