GoodLifeFamilyMag.com SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2018 53 tain Elementary School in Fort Worth, TX adopted a schedule of more frequent recesses based on new research on the education system in Finland. The school experimented with 4 recesses per day of 15 minutes per recess to see if hyperactive behaviors de- creased. The change got rave reviews! Teachers observed increased empathy, improved focus and less escape-seeking behavior in their students when they had access to more frequent breaks. We can see the same positive impact when we give our kids breaks at home during homework. Make sure these breaks are truly rejuvenating – TV and cell phone use simply won’t do when it comes to relaxing the mind. A short break outside, helping make dinner or a drive together to the store are all great ways to recharge.   MAXIMIZE YOUR CHILD’S POWER OF CHOICE Are you more motivated to do things you want to do, or things you are told to do? When we’re engaging activities that we choose, springing from original motivation, we’re more genuinely curious and we’re willing to work harder to find an answer. Peyton McCar- ron, Center Director of Explore Horizons tutoring center in Frisco, says: “It’s important to take a multisensory approach to learning. Kids with ADD and ADHD need to be engaged in multiple ways – they should be reading out loud, writing things down and manip- ulating objects. Make sure that they’re seeing objectives in mixed presentation, which makes sure that they’re always engaged.” Our students should have options to choose from in order to engage their unique learning style – rather than being told one way to do things. Creativity thrives when there’s more choice and more varia- tion. Learn your child’s unique preferences and encourage them to enjoy their learning choices!   Know that learning differences are all part of the broad spectrum of what makes each of us unique. Psychologist Devon MacEachron puts it best: “The genes for autism and ADHD are not errors, but rather are the result of variations in the human genome that have and will continue to have advantages for society.” It is these varia- tions that make your child who they are – listen to and embrace these differences.
