One of the first questions families ask me is, “How much does Assisted Living cost?”
I wish there was a simple answer, but the reality is that costs can vary quite a bit depending on the community, location, apartment size, and care needs.
After nearly 10 years of helping families navigate senior living decisions, I’ve learned that many people focus on the monthly rent without fully understanding what is included or how pricing works.
My hope is that this article helps simplify the process.
The Average Cost of Assisted Living in Texas
According to the CareScout Cost of Care Survey (formerly known as the Genworth Cost of Care Survey), the median cost of Assisted Living in Texas is approximately $5,600 per month.
That number is a helpful starting point, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
At Ruby Care Senior Living Advisors, we work with communities throughout Dallas-Fort Worth and West Texas, and actual costs can vary considerably.
In the DFW area, many Assisted Living communities fall between $4,500 and $8,000 per month, while some luxury communities can exceed $10,000 per month.
In West Texas markets such as Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, and Odessa, pricing is often somewhat lower, although every community is different.
What Is Included?
One thing that surprises many families is how much is included in Assisted Living.
Most communities provide:
- Housing
- Three meals a day
- Housekeeping
- Laundry services
- Transportation
- Activities and social events
- Utilities
- 24-hour staffing
- Emergency response systems
When families start adding up the costs of maintaining a home, groceries, transportation, housekeeping, and caregiving services, they often realize the difference isn’t as large as they originally thought.
Why Do Prices Vary So Much?
I recently worked with a family that toured several communities in the same area. They were surprised to find monthly costs differed by several thousand dollars.
The reasons were simple:
Some communities offered larger apartments.
Some had more amenities.
Some included more care services.
Others had licensed nursing staff available on-site.
The monthly rate is often a reflection of the services and support being provided.
Understanding Care Costs
This is where families are often caught off guard.
Most Assisted Living communities charge a base rent plus a care fee.
The care fee is based on the amount of assistance a resident needs with things like:
- Medication management
- Bathing
- Dressing
- Mobility
- Transfers
- Continence care
Someone who needs very little assistance may pay only a small care fee. Someone requiring more support will typically have a higher monthly cost.
This is why two residents living in the exact same apartment may pay different amounts.
Is Assisted Living More Expensive Than Staying at Home?
Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.
Every situation is different.
Families often compare Assisted Living to a mortgage payment or rent payment, but that’s only part of the picture.
At home, there may also be expenses for:
- Property taxes
- Homeowners insurance
- Utilities
- Home maintenance
- Lawn care
- Groceries
- Transportation
- Housekeeping
- Home care services
If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: Don’t wait for a crisis.
For seniors needing several hours of caregiving assistance each day, Assisted Living can actually be more affordable than remaining at home.

Some of the saddest conversations I have are with families who are making decisions from a hospital room after a fall, hospitalization, or medical emergency.
When families start researching earlier, they have more options, more time, and usually less stress.
You don’t have to be ready to move tomorrow to begin gathering information today.
