When it comes to world class art, the Dallas area is fortu- nate to have numerous exhibits, installations, galleries and collectors within its realm. From the Dallas Arts District to Frisco and beyond, artists’ creations bring beauty and culture to the metroplex. Now, the Dallas Arts District is collaborating with HALL Group, corporate sponsors and local photographers to raise funds for the Dallas Arts District Foundation, which re-in- vests in the visual and performing arts in the city. The juried competition, titled “Through the Lens” is calling on professional, emerging, mid-career and student photographers to submit existing or new images of the Dallas Arts District that reflect the theme, “A Day in the Life of The Dallas Arts District.” Photographs that are selected by jury will be featured in a hard- bound coffee table book entitled, “Through the Lens: Dallas Arts District.” Photographers of selected entries will receive a $500 stipend, a copy of the book and a gift from the Dallas Arts District. The photos included in the book will have an abbreviated biography of each photographer, specifications of each work and highlights of the Dallas Arts District project. Winners will also receive an in- vitation to the “Through the Lens” Gala, where all photographers will be celebrated and recognized for their contribution to the publication. They will further be recognized in press materials following the close of the exhibition, and select artists could also have the opportunity to license their art for future exhibition. In addition to the sale at vari- ous venues, the book will be located in every guestroom of the new luxury boutique HALL Arts Hotel, the newest endeavor of Craig Hall and HALL Group. Developed by HALL Group and designed by HKS Inc. and interior design firm Bentel & Bentel, the hotel’s structure and décor will mirror the iconic in- ternational architecture of the Dallas Arts District and display contemporary art in the common areas and guestrooms. “We decided to launch ‘Through The Lens’ to take steps to- ward ensuring the future of the Dallas Arts District, one of our city’s greatest treasures. Private investment in the arts is more important now than ever, and we are optimistic that the pro- ceeds from the project will bring new and varied programming to the community and will sup- port the endeavors of our exist- ing arts venues,” said Craig Hall, chairman and founder of HALL Group. Lily Weiss, Executive Director of the Dallas Arts District likes the idea that the book will be available for perusing in each hotel guestroom. “It allows people staying in the hotel to find an identity with the neighborhood they’re visiting, and the hotel suites will be named for venues in the Arts District.” She adds that the photography selected by the jurors will be included in the “Through the Lens” book, but oth- er photography may be considered for commission to be hung in the hotel rooms. It is apropos that Craig Hall and HALL Group are involved in this project as they are prime examples of those who play an integral role in supporting the arts, particularly in the shar- ing of public art. “Craig Hall and HALL Arts go beyond ‘being a part’ of the neighborhood,” said Weiss. “‘Through the Lens’ allows our Foundation's grant funding to grow while giving exposure to photographers at all stages. The Foundation funds small 501(c)(3) arts organizations to produce programming in the Arts District while bringing in new audiences. This is a win/ win for photographers, Dallas and the artists who receive grants from the Arts District Founda- tion.” HALL Group has a long his- tory of philanthropic endeavors supporting the arts, including the donation of two restaurant spac- es at HALL Arts to the Commu- nities Foundation of Texas, the Texas Sculpture Walk collection shared with the public at HALL Arts, and the Texas Sculpture Garden at HALL Park in Frisco, the largest private collection of contemporary Texas sculpture made available to the public. Images will be accepted through April 30, 2018, and entry is free.
