Julianna Margulies’ 2021 Summer Reads

By Erin Kodicek | Contributor, May 21, 2021

You know her as one of the stars of two of TV’s most popular dramas, ER and The Good Wife. Julianna Margulies displays the same vulnerability and courage on the page as she does on-screen in her memoir, Sunshine Girl, which chronicles her unconventional, and challenging, upbringing.

We asked Ms. Margulies which books she’s read and enjoyed lately, and all but one I happen to have read and am a big fan of as well (which means I’ll be checking out the outlier post-haste!). Here are the reads she heartily recommends.

Shuggie Bain

by Douglas Stuart

4.5 out of 5 stars. 21143 reviews. (21143)

I couldn’t put this book down. The journey Stuart takes you on through Shuggie’s life is at once harrowing and magnificent. He is a masterful storyteller. His book, although a novel, is poetry in motion.

The Dutch House

by Ann Patchett

4.4 out of 5 stars. 22462 reviews. (22462)

The tapestry of Patchett’s writing is so richly woven in this remarkable book. The relationship between brother and sister and the history of the house, which in and of itself was a fascinating character, made me want to jump into the pages and meet them all in person.

The Vanishing Half

by Brit Bennett

4.4 out of 5 stars. 62654 reviews. (62654)

Sometimes it takes a few pages to get into a book, but not with this one. I was gripped from the first word I read. The story of these twin sisters who choose opposite lives, and then the consequences of those decisions made this book not just a page turner but something I will never stop thinking about.

The Sound of Gravel: A Memoir

by Ruth Wariner

This memoir is about the life of a Mormon family told from the child’s perspective and depicts a life I could never imagine, a world I knew nothing of, and a heroine that you root for every step of the way.

Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef

by Gabrielle Hamilton

4.4 out of 5 stars. 971 reviews. (971)

I was captivated by this complicated life that leads our heroine into a life in the chef’s kitchen. You can feel, taste and smell everything in this enthralling memoir.
