Socially Distant Celebration Ideas for The Grads

By Colin White | Contributor

Our college and high school seniors have had many of their rites of passage upended. At least in the traditional sense. Most won’t get to walk across the stage to symbolically receive the culmination of years of hard work. Hosting a party to acknowledge their accomplishments is challenging, but there are still ways to celebrate your seniors and send them off to the next chapter in their lives.

  • Set up a drive-by party/parade! Everyone stays in their cars safely distanced from one another, but jazz it up! Make signs, have balloons, and play music that means something special to the grads. Have people shout their love and encouragement and do a victory lap together in a socially distant display of solidarity!

  • Make a video compilation of love and well-wishes recorded by friends and family. Make them as heartfelt or quirky as you see fit.

  • Have friends and family decorate lawn signs and fill the yard with their artistic messages of love and support.

  • Have you or your grads meticulously documented their time with photos and souvenirs? Make a big scrapbook or photobook! You can even have people write messages and put them in the book.

  • Keep the focus on memories for now and plan the party later! Does your grad have a plethora of t-shirts that meant something to them, but are long worn-out or outgrown? Sew or have sewn a comfy t-shirt quilt, so they can take their formative memories with them when they leave home.

  • Have a virtual party with the people who matter most. Select your graduates’ favorite restaurant and have lunch or dinner delivered to your home. Then, connect family and friends by Zoom, Skype or Google Hangout. Consider ways to get everyone to participate with well wishes and advice for your child.

  • Ready, set, shoot! Grab a camera and set up your own custom background with a theme that best suits your grad. Then, have a fun day shooting senior photos from the comfort of your own home!
