A Suburbanite’s Guide to a Food and Fun Filled Day in Dallas

by Bobbie Ames | Food & Entertainment Editor

Yes, yes, yes—I know we have great restaurants, amazing parks and trendy shops right in our own backyard. And I am certainly appreciative of all the perks that come with living in Suburbia.  But have you taken a day recently to enjoy the Big D?  In the quest of all good things to eat and drink, I’ve recently found myself enjoying some of the best of what Dallas has to offer.

Suburbanites, are we hip enough to infiltrate the Big D? Are we young enough? Savvy enough?  Who knows?  Just get out there and do it!

Grab your dog and your kids and take a little day trip to explore beyond your usual spots.

Starting out your day

Stop into Bisous Bisous patisserie for a delectable seasonal cruffin (signature croissant dough filled with vanilla bean cake and raspberry jam topped with vanilla bean crème cheese frosting) and a custom espresso drink.

OR

Try out Public School 214 for a sit down brunch (outside porch seating if you brought Fido) and watch the Millennials roam by. Start out by sharing the bacon cheddar tots (crazy good, nothing like the cafeteria served) and the cutting board (cured meats and cheeses).  The fire roasted vegetable hash topped with a poached egg was delicious, and the burgers looked great.  But really the best part of being at PS214 is the vibe.

Ready to work off your breakfast?

You have to do something between meals—so, shopping anyone? Head to the Knox-Henderson area for the best shopping:

STARPOWER at Knox Henderson
Nest

On the Knox side, there’s the Apple store, STARPOWER, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, Smith & Hawken, Pottery Barn and Z Gallerie. Check out Nest (amazing home furnishings), Forty Five Ten (fashions for him and her and home), Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams—all on McKinney Avenue.

Save room for a drink or bite after all your shopping, as this area is known for restaurants and bars as well.

  OR

Katy Trail

Looking for something a little more energetic?  Those cruffins are not going to melt away by themselves. Head to the Katy trail for a 3.5-mile walk.  Make sure to take a break at the Katy Trail Ice House—the perfect casual spot to rehydrate.

Feeling peckish yet?

Head over to the newly renovated Farmers’ Market. Check out the renovated indoor area, the shed, which houses some truly great casual dining spots. Try sampling one item from each vendor!  Then head on outside.  You cannot help but be inspired to cook when you see the abundance of fruits, vegetables and organic meats under the open sided roofed area.  Buy something to take home and create a meal together when you return to Suburbia.

Can you handle one more food spot?  Go to Scardello cheese shop for some mind blowing gourmet foods.  The spicy almonds are out of this world.  And the cheeses, the cheeses, the cheeses! Delicious.

Editor’s Tips

– Not only does Scardello have amazing cheeses, but also their wine selection is truly unique.

– Join Cheesemonger and Certified Sommelier Marco Villegas to taste 4 wines paired with 4 handmade cheeses for just 10 dollars! Saturdays from 3-5 p.m.
