It’s Never Too Late to Learn Something New

by Alicia Wanek | Staff Writer

If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?   Lots of things to be sure, but you don’t have to resign yourself to the status quo.  At Richland College, the Continuing Education Department and Emeritus plus 50 Program allow you to explore new careers, new interests, and new places, no matter how long it’s been since you were last in a classroom.

What’s your passion? Dog obedience? Real Estate? Wedding Planning? Non-profit management? Over 5,000 continuing education students annually explore these and more than 50 other diverse programs at Richland.  Many classes are designed to help the student learn a skill that will help them find employment, change careers or become more valuable to their current employer, and many offer certificates for successful course completion.  Examples of certificates available in the Health Professions division are Pharmacy Technician and Medical Assisting. Richland also offers certificates in Project Management, Non-profit Management, Mediation, and many others. You can become a Licensed Realtor by taking the Real Estate certificate program, all classes of which are accredited by the Texas Real Estate Commission. Or you can become a certified Child Development Associate. These classes and programs enrich and position participants to be at the forefront of technological and educational advances, and their small class size, usually of only 8 to 10 students, allow for a lot of interaction with instructors.

If you are looking for classes developed for older adults, whether that’s you or your parents, you may be interested in Richland’s Emeritus program. The Richland Emeritus plus 50 Program provides affordable, quality education to enable individuals 50 and over to stay intellectually challenged and enriched, physically fit and socially connected. Emeritus students are invited to attend a “Kick-off” event every semester where instructors are invited to showcase their courses in everything from history to computer instruction, finance to wellness. Each semester includes an opportunity to take a bus trip to an area of interest in the greater Dallas region. Trips have included the McKinney Holiday Celebration, the Old Red Courthouse Museum and the Bush Museum.

Dallasite Mary Kay Ash once said, “You can go as far as your mind lets you.”  Maybe it’s time to let your mind travel somewhere new.
