Rainbow Days

Rainbow Days, Inc. (RDI) was founded in 1982 as a support group for young children of alcoholics. The need for this type of service was so great that RDI soon began to open these groups in schools, shelters and other community locations. Since then, they have broadened their assistance to include a variety of alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs.

RDI’s Children, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) division provides life skills education to children, youth and families living in high-risk situations at a variety of locations including homeless shelters, transitional living centers, domestic violence centers, after-school programs, schools and recreation centers in Dallas, Collin, Rockwall and Denton Counties.

In 1989 RDI started the Family Connection Program to assist homeless children living in emergency, transitional or domestic violence shelters. Counselors and volunteers hold weekly support groups for children and their families.

These programs teach children skills to cope with the every day stresses of life in the highrisk situation of being homeless with special emphasis on how to live a drug-free life.

Rainbow Days will host their 2015 Pot of Gold Luncheon on April 24. The keynotev speaker for the event will be Jeannette Walls, best-selling author of The Glass Castle. In her memoir, Walls recounts her nomadic and povertystricken childhood at the hands of her alcoholic father and mentally unstable mother. In the book, Walls states, “I lived in a world that any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes”.

To date, Rainbow Days has served nearly 178,000 children in North Texas.
