It’s hard to imagine life without Disney movies, princess costumes, and family vacations to the Magic Kingdom. And, it’s even harder to imagine that it all began with one man, whose journey from cartoon artist to iconic pioneer was powered by an unparalleled passion to achieve his dream. It’s interesting that the now common use of the term “Dreamer” is an acronym that has little to do with actually pursuing the “American Dream.” I wish it did, though, because while the ethics of immigration law leave many on opposite sides of the fence (or wall), pursuing one’s dreams is something most everyone can agree is a good thing. The belief that if we set goals, work hard, and keep our noise-blocking headphones on tight when it comes to the doubters, we can fulfill our highest aspirations. I’m not talking pipe dreams, people! Dreams without a strong tether of work ethic, persistence, and talent are merely an illusion. Teaching our kids seems to work best by example. If they witness us putting the brakes on our own dreams, even if it is in sacrifice to their needs, what are we teaching them? Martin Luther King, Jr. arguably had the most famous of dreams, and his dream started a peaceful revolution that continues today. I had goosebumps listening to his 9-year-old granddaughter, Yolanda Renee, share her dream with the world at the “March for Our Lives” demonstration last month. One little girl with a big dream to end racism and gun violence. It can happen. Indeed, not all dreams have world impact, but your dreams impact your world and ignite a flame in all those around you. America’s earliest pioneers braved months at sea battling storms, hunger, and illness in their quest for a better life for themselves and their families. Fortunately, throughout our country’s history “Living the Dream” continues to be a steadfast and worthwhile pursuit. This issue of GLF is filled with sage advice, supportive programs, and goal-setting ideas to help you reawaken your inner dreamer. It’s never too soon – or too late – to make it happen. Walt Disney’s dream created a legacy of joy for generations past and those yet to come. And it all started with a sketch of a mouse. “First, think. Second, dream. Third, believe. And finally, dare.” - Walt Disney
