Advertising exec Dan Wieden launched Nike's first "Just Do It" TV spot almost 30 years ago featuring 80-year-old Walt Stack jogging across the Golden Gate Bridge chatting about his daily 17-mile run and joking that he kept his teeth from chattering in winter by leaving them in his locker. Heck, we thought, if Walt can do it…. When our kids are young, they are exposed to all types of competition, be it a sports team, a theatrical audition or a spelling bee. We parents are there to cheer them on, and win or lose, we remind them that they have no chance to win if they never try. As they grow, so too does the intensity of competition. Children look to us for signs of encouragement, and we reinforce that winners are not people who never fail but people who never quit. There is a saying that some people make it happen, others watch it happen and still others wonder, “What happened?” I fancy myself as someone willing to go for it – someone who tries to make things happen, and I encourage my teenage children to challenge themselves and take risks in every facet of their lives. Fearlessness may come with failure, but failure is certain without fearlessness. So at least try it. “Just Do It” gives us optimism and a can-do spirit. It strengthens us. It gives us hope. It encourages us to strive toward personal goals like starting a new business, buying that dream home, running a marathon, or extricating oneself from a bad relationship. Nike’s empowering motto gives us chutzpah. Yes, you may have to work harder, be tougher, sacrifice more, but you too can DO it.
