The Clause Collection at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
In the historic DeGolyer House lavishly decorated for the holidays, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden debuts The Claus Collection Santa Exhibit, sponsored by Amegy Bank through December 31. For the first time to ever be displayed as a collection, the Dallas Arboretum showcases close to 500 Santa figures on loan from the Junior League of Dallas members. The collection started with a donation from Junior League Sustainer Dian Moore, and then additional Active and Sustaining members came together this year to share pieces from their holiday décor with all of Dallas. On November 22, the JLD members were the first to see this special holiday display.
According to Missy Whisler, Dallas Arboretum’s senior vice president of sales and development, “Whether you call him Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Sinterklaas or Papa Noel, you will enjoy seeing the many artistic representations of the jolly gift-giver as he is known around the world.”
The Santa figures range in size from 2 inches to more than 5 feet tall. Each Santa showcases compelling craftsmanship in a variety of materials including gourds, papier-mâché, porcelain, cornhusks, fur, feathers, wood and award winning needlepoint, making the exhibit both stunning in color and texture.
These Santas do more than just distribute toys to the good girls and boys; the rest of the year, they fish and ski and take care of woodland creatures. They ride canoes and roller skates, and they enjoy revelry with their elves. The oldest Santa is from 1910, and there are many hand-carved Russian ones along with more than 60 African American Santas.
The Claus Collection Santa Exhibit is open daily in the DeGolyer House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is open on Wednesday evenings 6 to 8 p.m. from November 30 to December 28. In special celebration, Restaurant DeGolyer will be open for reservation-only dinners on November 30, December 7, 14, 21, 22, 23 and 28 at 7 p.m. Seating is limited. Guests are also welcome to enjoy Wednesday evening visits with a live Santa from 6 to 8 p.m. at the DeGolyer House from November 30 through December 21.
