Prioritize Your Personal Care

Rejuvenate Your Beauty Regimen with Safer Products

by Alicia Wanek

Do you know what you’re putting on your body?

Kathy Grane, Executive Director with Beautycounter does, and she believes you should, too. “Our skin is our largest organ, and it quickly absorbs any chemicals in our personal care products.  With more and more information that many ingredients in these products are linked to health concerns, now is the time to prioritize your personal care regimen for you and your family,” she says. Founder Gregg Renfrew learned that over the past two decades, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products, but the United States has only partially banned 30 to date.  She decided right then that, “We deserve better, and we’re doing something about it.”  She wanted to “put the truth back in beauty.”  The company has “The Never List” listing over 1500 ingredients determined unsafe that won’t be found in any of their products.

Named one of the “Top 10 Innovations that Made Women’s Lives Better in 2016” by Fast Company magazine, Beautycounter is a company committed to producing a luxurious, high-performance line, but they meet very rigorous industry standards.  Their full line of skin care, makeup, and bath and body products are developed with a research team to be both top performing and lasting.  Kathy calls it the bridge from Whole Foods to Chanel.  They have the luxury brand identification but cater to the shopper who cares what they’re putting in and on their body.

For Kathy, it’s the belief in the product, her ability to have a business where she can balance work and family, and the opportunity to work with what she calls a “tribe” of dedicated people working together that have made this such a perfect fit for her.  She also appreciates that she is able to “… have fun, educate others, and change people’s lives in ways they never ever thought possible…”  She is passionate about using her voice to share the company’s mission, “To get safer products into the hands of everyone.”

“I’m a wife and mom—and, like many of you, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. As I applied sunscreen, lotion, and any number of beauty products on myself and my kids, I never thought for a second they might not be safe. After all, I thought, we live in a country that regulates everything. So imagine my surprise when I learned that when it comes to the personal care industry, that’s simply not the case. Companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety. And so I started Beautycounter, a company devoted to progress.” – Gregg Renfrew, Beautycounter founder
